The Waukee Brief
Waukee is growing fast, and the road network is racing to keep up. Here is what is actually under construction around town right now, what it is becoming, and how long you will be dodging cones.
Alice's Road is being rebuilt into a 5-lane section (two lanes each way plus a center turn lane/median) in a joint project with the City of Clive. It closed to through traffic on March 24, 2026, for the 2026 construction season; the southern portion reopened in mid-July with finishing work continuing, while the northern segment stayed closed. Detour on Hickman Road, 156th Street, and Douglas Parkway.
The long-running project to close the last gap in University Avenue between S Warrior Lane and 6th Street. Warrior Lane closed from Ford Lane/Park Road up to University Avenue on March 4, 2026, for several months of road and utility work. 2026 work also covers University Avenue west to Sugar Creek and ties into the 10th Street extension.
A large reconstruction and extension of 10th Street with extensive utility and infrastructure work, tied to the Kettlestone area's growth. The city lists it as under construction with a projected completion in fall 2027, so expect this corridor to be active for a while.
A downtown Triangle upgrade that turns Walnut Street (6th to Ashworth) one-way with colored pavement, new lighting, and removable bollards so the street can close for events. The city has listed it at the bidding stage with a projected completion around November 2026.
The Grand Prairie Parkway interchange at I-80 has opened, giving Waukee a direct interstate connection on its west side, with additional corridor improvements phased in. Watch for periodic lane work as the surrounding ramps and parkway are finished out.

As one of the fastest-growing cities in Iowa, Waukee is constantly building and widening roads to keep up with new housing and the Kettlestone district, so seasonal construction is common, especially spring through fall.
Alice's Road has been under a full reconstruction to a 5-lane section since March 2026, closed to through traffic for the construction season. The southern portion reopened in mid-July 2026 with finishing work continuing, while the northern segment stayed closed longer. Use Hickman Road, 156th Street, and Douglas Parkway to route around active closures, and check the city's updates for the latest.
The University Avenue Area Improvements project is closing the last gap in University Avenue between S Warrior Lane and 6th Street. In 2026, Warrior Lane closed from Ford Lane and Park Road up to University Avenue for road and utility work, and the project continues into 2027. Expect this corridor to be active for a while.
It varies by project. The downtown Triangle streetscape has been targeted for late 2026, while the larger 10th Street extension is listed for fall 2027 and the University Avenue work continues into 2027 and beyond. Timelines shift, so check the City of Waukee's Capital Improvement Projects page for the latest.
